Halliburton Science Day planned for hundreds of future scientists

Hundreds of budding scientists will get a peek into what life as a science major is like at the Ā鶹AV.

The Ray P. Authement College of Sciences at Ā鶹AV will host its annual Halliburton Science Day from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, on campus.

High school juniors and seniors, parents, teachers and guidance counselors who register will participate in Halliburton Science Day 2016. The event is free; the deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 21.

Participants will tour Ā鶹AV’s schools of Computing and Informatics, and Geosciences, and the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Ā鶹AV professors and students will conduct experiments and discuss research projects, said Dr. Mike Totaro, associate dean of the College of Sciences.

ā€œIt enables students to experience a day in the life of a science major, and view laboratory demonstrations and presentations. The hope is to give them a glimpse into the excitement and sense of exploration that’s possible through studies in one of the areas of science at Ā鶹AV,ā€ he said.

Faculty and staff members will be on hand with information about University programs, admissions, housing, financial aid, scholarships, and careers. A panel of University alumni with careers in science-related fields will also host a question and answer session as part of Halliburton Science Day 2016.

ā€œWe want to make it as convenient as possible for potential science majors to get a really good sense about what they can expect when coming to school here, and an idea about some of the types of careers that will be available to them,ā€ Totaro said.

Science Day 2016 sponsors are Halliburton and Sodexo.
